PropertyMe selected to pilot Federal Government-led initiative to protect renters’ information

PropertyMe to trial digital process designed to keep rental applicants’ personal information safer

PropertyMe, Australia’s leading property management software, has been selected to pilot the use of Digital ID and the Consumer Data Right (CDR) in the rental sector in a Federal Government-led initiative.

As part of a consortium, PropertyMe will trial how renters can verify who they are and demonstrate they can afford to make rental payments, without handing over sensitive documents to multiple parties. The consortium includes ConnectID®, the digital identity solution by Australian Payments Plus (AP+), and Cuscal, a payments and regulated data services provider.

Led by the Department of Finance and the Treasury, the pilot will explore how Digital ID and CDR can streamline the digital rental application process, so that renters share only the information necessary and Property Managers receive verified, trusted data quickly.

“Right now, renters are asked to upload anything from driver licences and passports to bank statements, payslips and even social profiles, often to several platforms,” PropertyMe Chief Product Officer Scott Shepherd said. “Products and services now exist that enable us to reimagine that. Renters should be able to prove who they are and their ability to pay the rent, without handing over additional information.”

This approach seeks to reduce the risk of data breaches, improve trust between renters and agencies while streamlining a complicated process. With Australia’s national vacancy rate at just 1.2%1, both renters and Property Managers are under pressure to progress rental applications quickly.

“This is about making life easier for everyone,” Shepherd said. “For renters, it means more control over where their data goes, better peace of mind when sharing personal data and fewer forms to fill. For Property Managers, it means less admin and more confidence that the information they’re receiving is accurate.”

The pilot is part of a broader push by the Australian Government to explore practical use cases of Digital ID and Consumer Data Right technologies across key industries.

“We’re excited to help build the future of data security and payments in property,” Shepherd added. “This pilot is a small but important step towards a future where applying for a home is faster, simpler and more secure.”
